Magnetism

The properties of modern magnetic materials are used in many ways in our highly engineered world and they are, although often invisible, indispensable in our every day life. Especially in the context of the possibilities we have today to tailor modern functional materials and material systems also on atomic scale, magnetism again and again shows unexpected and surprising phenomena with high technological potential, as for example in the field of magnetic data storage.

The powerful synchrotron radiation and neutron sources open up unique possibilities to look at magnetic properties on the microscopic scale. Besides neutron scattering, in the last years the synchrotron radiation from modern storage rings has allowed many new research possibilities due to its high brilliance and polarization properties. It is used in different techniques in the area of spectroscopy, crystallography and microscopy of magnetic structures.

The research in this field encompasses for example femtosecond-magnetism, magnetic nanostructures, new magnetic materials, magnetic layer systems and ferrofluids.
